CASE STUDIES

INTERNATIONAL OIL COMPANY

SAMPLE OF MATTER TYPES: Legal Fee Negotiation, Toxic Tort Claims

LENGTH OF TIME IN PROGRAM: 1 ½ years

NATURE OF ASSIGNMENT: Client represented by LCC was an International Oil Company partially owned by the State of Argentina.  Client was represented by the firm in defense of Toxic Tort claims against the company.  LCC analyzed the complete set of legal fees and designed a negotiating strategy designed to maximize recovery while preserving the relationship. The firm continued to represent the client after settlement.  LCC was given authority to negotiate directly with the firm.  Client was extremely happy with the structured settlement.

OUTCOMES: 15.7% negotiated reduction.  Total legal fees = $38.1Million.

CHALLENGES: Negotiating reductions from fees already paid previously to the law firm; this was especially challenging because the law firm continued to represent this client in ongoing litigation.  The client allowed LCC to be the conduit in negotiating with the law firm, thereby preserving the relationship between the client and the law firm.
