JAPANESE SUPPLEMENT MANUFACTURER

SAMPLE OF MATTER TYPES: Consumer Fraud and Attorney Malpractice

LENGTH OF TIME IN PROGRAM: 1 ½ years

NATURE OF ASSIGNMENT: LCC was presented as legal fee expert in this litigation.  A Japanese manufacturer sued a U.S. firm for legal malpractice and challenged the fees charged.  LCC audited the legal billings, helped prepare discovery and pleadings, and provided technical and factual backup at mediation.  As a result, client achieved substantial reductions from its billings in a mediated settlement.

OUTCOMES: 37.8% final court approved adjustment to legal fees.  Total legal fees = $29.1 Million.

CHALLENGES:  This Japanese company was taken advantage of by the U.S. law firm which was quite bold in its exorbitant billings.  In addition, cultural, geographic and language issues complicated the pursuit of recovery.  This project required multiple meetings with client and legal team in various jurisdictions.
